Best way to meet people in Canada?

Hi all I'm 20, and am currently a little bit lost with where I want to be going in life. After a pretty horrible breakup with my 4 year partner I've decided that now is as good a time as any to do what I really want. Canada has been a dream of mine for ages (I've played Ice Hockey locally since I was 7) and am looking to move to Canada in the winter season (hopefully for a year) to get in some skiing and hockey. I'm just wondering if I move over by myself what the best way to meet people would be? If I can meet some locals or other tourists it will make the trip all the better but I'm not too sure where to look. Similarly I'm looking at working in or around the area too which is my next bit of research but if anyone can recommend anything let me know!
